Undergraduate Research Assistant

May - August 2020 • Haverford, PA

What I liked

I enjoyed being able to work on independent research under my advisor. It was valuable to get a sense of how to pace independent work, what timeline to follow, what types of troubleshooting research requires, etc.

What I wish was different

Could have done without the pandemic.

Advice

Scheduling my time more strictly would have made the experience go much smoother. This is easier said than done during a pandemic, but I definitely recommend setting a stricter work schedule for yourself when doing independent research.

Digital Scholarship Research Fellow

May - August 2018 • Haverford, PA

What I liked

I loved the supportive work environment, which allowed me to pick up Python and Django development skills even though I had little to no background with these skills.

What I wish was different

I wish that I could have worked there longer and made my schedule more stringent on deadlines; sometimes, if my project was not done when I wanted it to be done, it limited what I would get done for the rest of the summer.

Advice

I think that it's critical to work as a team even within a quiet office space. The project manager always held workshops so that we would talk to each other as a team, but sometimes I still feared asking "stupid questions." The truth is that there are no stupid questions, and you need to trust your team to get development projects done.

Undergraduate Chemistry Researcher

June - August 2018 • Ardmore, PA

What I liked

What I wish was different

Advice

You don't have to be a chemistry whiz to work in a chemistry lab. I'm a biology major, but I had a great relationship with my PI from a previous class that I had taken with him, which made the experience intellectually engaging, fun, and rewarding to be able to work with someone who knows how you think and how to teach you!

Economic Research assistant

May - July 2018 • Haverford, PA

What I liked

I liked the fact that my work was directly helpful to my professor's research.

What I wish was different

I wish i had played a more important role in analysis rather then working on data cleansing/management.

Advice

If you get confused just ask questions. There is no harm in being confused and there is no need to figure everything out by yourself.

Student Researcher

April 2018 • Haverford, PA

What I liked

My team was very welcoming. The work, involving extensive literature research and programming, was very intellectually engaging, compared to lab work I did last summer.

What I wish was different

I wish I had a longer time before the next semester to finish the project head-to-tail (this wish is unrealistic). I also frequently hoped that I could have someone closer who might help out when I stuck on a problem.

Advice

Don't be afraid to try something new (and abandon something old you didn't like but were accustomed to, even if you were guaranteed a scheduled, promising future). PS: This may not be a good piece of advice. Even though I enjoyed my job more, my future career is really undetermined right now, and among Haverford faculty and curricula there isn't a circle in what I am doing.
